WITT Limited is an innovative technology business bringing research, knowledge and expertise together to design and produce patented products which harvest energy from the environment.
Based in South West England, the company is developing completely green power solutions which will vastly reduce CO2 consumption.
One of their market-leading innovations is a generator that utilises “vortex induced vibration” to create power. WITT’s technology can create energy from motion, and can be used in the subsea environment to produce power from ocean currents.
In September 2021, WITT contacted Feritech with an urgent brief in relation to developing a product for a MOD/ DASA contract. Design Manager Jon Samuel explains:
“WITT approached us with a new design for a subsea housing for their generator, to be completed in advance of an important trial. We did a design study on the subsea housing, including a structural assessment. We also conducted a manufacturability appraisal, both of which were presented in a written report.
“Following the client’s review of the report, Feritech were asked to re-design the housing to include the suggestions we made to improve manufacturability. We then produced a full set of drawings for manufacture and we machined a trial version of the housing from billet aluminium.
“All of the above was completed in one month in order to meet the client’s critical pre-booked test date for a Haslar tow tank trial. The Haslar tow tank is a test facility that simulates an object moving through water at a fixed speed.”
WITT were delighted with the results achieved by Feritech and the speedy response. Their Project Manager, Will Boult, kindly gave the following feedback to the Feritech team:
“I wanted to thank you for your efforts in getting this enclosure over the line, both in design and manufacture. In particular, the efforts to have it completed for last Saturday -this was definitely ‘over and above’. It has meant that we could build and test before the trial days. Everything was fine and fitted perfectly. Most importantly we were able to record some good results.
“We really appreciate your efforts in making sure we had the parts ready in time for this important trial. It’s a massive thanks from us at WITT!”
Feritech’s Managing Director, Rob Ferris, says:
“WITT are a great client who are doing some exciting and pioneering work, finding new ways to harvest power from the environment. Our team love to take on tough challenges like these, which allow us to use our skills and expertise to their full extent.”
